Doing Business A Better Way

I’ve been involved in building an international network of independent business owners for 9 years. I have one preferred supplier company and where gaps exist in their portfolio we have plugged them with small commercial relationships with specialist suppliers. About 6 years ago I realised that the model of building business was broken but I had no idea of what to fix it with or what to replace it with. This problem sorely tried my patience over these years but my faith in the concept was sound so we stuck with it. It was a bit like a franchisor who knew they had a good product but their delivery and marketing models were so ineffective that very few ever succeeded - the franchisor got rich but people got hurt.  All I knew was that the model didn’t work, people got hurt and that didn’t line up with my values.

In March 2008 I received an e mail from a colleague to suggest I look into something refreshing and different. Little did I know then that not only would it reveal what was broken but also a way to fix the model so that I didn’t see anyone else hurt.

The uniqueness of this approach centres around the creation of a discrete and finite business unit. This becomes the organisational structure around which everything else is built. Because it is finite and relatively small once a new person has built theirs then they needn’t do anything other than help their new people do likewise.
